    Kinematics: configuration, deformation and motion. Fundamental principles of mechanics: conservation of mass, virtual powers (conservation of linear and angular momentum), conservation of energy (first law of thermodynamics) and second law of thermodynamics. Constitutive equations for solids: elastic solid, elasto-plastic solid and viscoelastic solid. Fourier ‘s Law. Heat conduction. Wave propagation.

  • Mathematical Methods in Mechanical Engineering II

    Sets; Linear spaces; Linear varieties; Normed spaces; General spaces; Inner product; Banach space; Hilbert space; General Bases;
    Linear transformations; Tensors: Tensor analysis – tensor product, components of a tensor, sum of tensors, invariants of tensors, tensor function, change of basis, eigenvectors and eigenvalues; Application: (1) stress and strain tensors, (2) Equilibrium problems – Galerkin method.
